Chapter 17
The taxi picked Danny up as arranged and the driver helped him into the house and waived any offer of payment. Danny slumped into his armchair after turning up the heating and putting a blanket around his shoulders. He was sweating and feverish and fell into a fitful sleep and didnât disturb when Ginnie returned home. It was still light, and she was early and fretted around him. He stirred when she touched his burning forehead.
His voice croaked; his mouth was dry.
âTook the day off?â
Ginnie just smiled and held a glass of cool water to his lips. She said nothing.
âThanks for earlier.â
She frowned. âEarlier?â
He nodded, and she took the glass away, and he slumped back in his chair, breathing hard. âYeah, just for being there. Thanks.â
She frowned. âWhen do you go back?â
He narrowed his eyes, thinking hard, trying to retrieve the information from the fog swirling around his brain. âWednesday. Yes, Wednesday. Taxi man picks me up at half nine.â
She fussed about him for a little longer.
âLetâs get you to bed, young man.â
âOoh, matron.â
After a struggle, she encouraged him to his bed. She wondered if he should be so sick, and he was due more treatment the following day, although she recalled him saying that the doctor had said that the first few times would be the worst, as his body fought both his illness and the treatment. She looked at the sheet of medication and took out the required dose and eased him upright to take it. He eschewed the offer of food and slipped into a fitful sleep.
Dawn was still playing hide and seek with the night when Danny woke with a start. He was alone in bed and as he exhaled and sat up; he noticed Ginnie sitting on the armchair by the window. She had turned the chair, so it faced him and had a duvet pulled tightly to her. She was staring at him. He sipped the water by his bed, and the fever seemed to have subsided. Still, she didnât speak.
âMorning babe.â
She still didnât speak, and he frowned. âYou OK, Gin?â
She shook herself from her reverie. âSorry. How are you?â
Danny mentally took stock. He had been asleep for what seemed like an eternity and had a tightness across his brow which he couldnât shake away. He reached for his meds. Which ones should he take? Ginnie saw his confusion and peeled herself out of her duvet, and gave him the correct dosage.
âWhat are you doing in the chair?â
She shot him a stare and frowned. âYou donât remember?â
He shook his head. âRemember what? Was I thrashing about?â
She just nodded. He studied her. âGinnie? What is it?â
She shook her head and started to move away, and he grabbed her hand. âGinnie?â
She exhaled and sat on the corner of the bed. Dawn was finally winning her battle with the dark.
âItâs, just. Well, it was the weirdest thing. You were delirious when I came to bed and called out a few times and then started talking. Well, you were having a conversation with somebody.
